We’ve visited the Matlock park five times and never faced long queues. Located just outside Bakewell in the heart of the Peak District National Park, it offers the perfect mix of beautiful English gardens and genuinely brilliant outdoor play spaces.
The standout feature for families is the large sandpit area, which is always a huge hit with younger children. It’s well set up with space to dig, build, and play safely, and it’s positioned so parents can sit nearby with a coffee from Quackers Café while keeping an eye on everything.
There are also lawn games set out across the grass, including family-friendly garden games that make it feel relaxed and welcoming rather than overly formal. Tiny Town Chesterfield is one of our favourite indoor play venues locally. It’s a role-play village where children are free to explore mini shops, kitchens, and homes, encouraging imagination and confidence.
It’s always clean, well run, and perfect for younger children who might find large soft play overwhelming. The tidy-up song at the end is always a highlight and helps make leaving easier.

Bakewell’s splash pad is one of the best free water play areas in the Peak District and a big hit when the weather’s warm. It’s in the main recreation ground and has water jets that spray up from the ground, giving kids lots of space to run, cool off, and play safely.
