Every parent suddenly starts looking for exactly the same thing… family fun for the kids can cool off, burn energy and hopefully sleep properly afterwards.

Markeaton Park Splash Pool
📍 Markeaton Lane, Derby, DE22 4AA
If you grew up anywhere near Derby, chances are you went to Markeaton paddling pool as a kid yourself.
And honestly? It’s still one of the best free family water play spots in Derbyshire.
The paddling pool and water play area sit near the hugely popular Mundy Play Centre and become packed the second the temperature goes above about 20 degrees.
What makes Markeaton such a great family day is everything else around it:
- splash pool
- play areas
- mini golf
- high ropes
- tennis court areas
- cafes
- picnic areas
- loads of green space
The paddling pool usually opens during the summer season from around the end of May into early September, although Derby City Council can temporarily close it for essential work, water testing or maintenance.
Top tip? Get there earlier in the day during school holidays because by lunchtime it gets VERY busy.
Best for: toddlers to around age 10.
Chaddesden Park Water Play Area
📍 Chaddesden Park, Derby, DE21
This one often gets forgotten about compared to Markeaton, but local parents absolutely love it in summer.
The water play area is ideal for younger children and works brilliantly if you want a cheaper, lower-key afternoon without paying theme park prices.
You’ve got:
- water features
- spray park areas
- accessible playgrounds
- football space
- picnic areas
- open grassland
It’s especially good for younger primary school children who still want splash fun but maybe don’t need massive water slides yet.
Take spare clothes. Always.
Because children apparently physically cannot walk past water without launching themselves fully into it.
Robin Hoods Wheelgate Park
📍 White Post, Farnsfield, NG22 8HX
Wheelgate is absolute chaos in the best possible way.
This place mixes rides, indoor play, animals and one of the best splash play zones for younger children anywhere near Derbyshire.
The water play area includes:
- tipping buckets
- water cannons
- splash pad areas
- smaller slides
- fountains
- spray features
It’s brilliant for children of all ages but especially good around toddler to age 9.
There’s enough to make it a full day out too which matters when you’re paying entry prices.
Expect:
- soaked children
- arguments in the gift shop
- at least one child refusing to leave
The splash areas normally operate through the warmer months and school holidays.
Alton Towers Waterpark
📍 Alton Towers Resort, ST10 4DB
If you want the BIG waterpark experience, this is still one of the best within driving distance of Derbyshire.
Splash Landings is going to get most kids excited, and the plus side is it feels like another climate entirely.
Inside there’s:
- giant water slides
- lazy rivers
- toddler splash zones
- interactive water play area
- drop slides
- fountains
- family splash pools
One of the best things about this one is that it works even when the British weather is doing its usual thing because much of it is indoors. There is the fab outdoor area, which we went to and Eliza was old enough to ride the mini slides into the outdoor pool. Her and Kimi raced each other down the mini rapid slides.
It does state if it gets busy there is a wrist band order for shorter stays but as of yet we havent ever been asked to leave early.
It’s expensive compared to the free splash pads, but for a full family day out, it’s brilliant. keep an eye out for offers and always try to book in advance for the best rate, don’t forget they also charge for parking.
Older kids especially LOVE this one as it has some good slides to ride.
Top tip:
Book earlier slots if you can, because weekends and school holidays get packed fast.
Twinlakes Park Splash Play
📍 Melton Spinney Road, Melton Mowbray, LE14 4FF
Twinlakes is great for the younger ones, and once the summer hits and the big splash pad goes on its a great place to be for kids and well worth the entry fee.
The splash play area is genuinely good and includes:
- interactive fountains
- spray park fun
- water cannons
- smaller water slides
- toddler splash spaces
But because Twinlakes also has rides, indoor play and outdoor attractions, it works brilliantly for mixed ages.
Bakewell Recreation Ground Splash Area
📍 Haddon Road, Bakewell, DE45
A lot of people still don’t realise Bakewell in Derbyshire Dales has water play during summer. And honestly this is such a lovely easier-going Peak District family afternoon but traffic can be busy and parking non existant so sometimes the bus can be a stress free option.
If your planning a day in Bakewell I would suggest you need to be there before 9.30am during the summer months.
Easy to make a whole day and pop into Bakewell centre for a look round at all the little shops and grab some fish and chips or ice cream.
The recreation ground includes:
- splash pad style water play
- climbing equipment
- football space
- Tenis court you can book
- Ping pong table
- picnic spots
- Playground
The biggest bonus though is the location for a great day for the whole family.
You can combine it with:
- fish and chips
- ice cream
- wandering around Bakewell
- riverside walks
- playground time
- Summer events in Bakewell for kids
It feels much calmer than some of the huge splash parks and works especially well for younger children.
Rivelin Valley Water Playground
📍 Rivelin Valley Road, Sheffield, S6
Technically, Sheffield rather than Derbyshire… but a perfect spot that loads of Derbyshire families head here once the weather turns warm.
This is probably one of the best FREE water play areas anywhere nearby.
Unlike some concrete splash pads, this feels much more natural and adventurous.
You’ve got:
- shallow channels
- water jets
- streams
- splash play
- dam-building areas
- picnic areas
Great for kids who like exploring rather than just standing under fountains.
Top tip: Take water shoes because surfaces can get slippery.
And get there EARLY on hot weekends, because parking fills up quickly.
Hathersage Outdoor Swimming Pool
📍 Oddfellows Road, Hathersage, S32 1DU
One of the most iconic outdoor pools anywhere near Derbyshire. Book ahead online so you are not disappointed.
Swimming outdoors, surrounded by the Peak District hills, just feels like proper summer memories.
The heated outdoor pool is brilliant for:
- confident swimmers
- older children
- family swimming
- combining with a Peak District day out
And because it’s heated, it’s actually usable even when Derbyshire weather decides summer is over halfway through August.
Booking ahead is VERY recommended during school holidays.
Moorways Sports Village
📍 Moor Lane, Derby, DE24 9HY
This is one of the best rainy day family water options locally.
Moorways has:
- flumes
- splash zones
- indoor pools
- water features
- family swimming areas
Perfect when:
- the weather isn’t reliable
- you want proper changing facilities
- you’ve got younger children
- outdoor splash parks aren’t open yet
It’s a really solid all-year-round family option.
Carsington Water
📍 Big Lane, Ashbourne, DE6 1ST
Carsington isn’t a splash park exactly, but it absolutely deserves including because so many Derbyshire families head here during warm weather.
Perfect for:
- paddling at shoreline edges
- water sports
- walking
- picnics
- bike rides
- family days out
This one works particularly well for older children who are slightly past traditional splash parks.
CONKERS Splash Play

CONKERS is such a good option for mixed-age family days.
The outdoor splash and water play sections include:

But the huge advantage here is all the extra activities too:

Great if you want more than “just” a splash park.
Clifton Park Watersplash

This one has become massively popular after its big watersplash redevelopment.
The splash area includes:

- spray tunnels

- splash pads

And because Clifton Park also has rides, play areas and open spaces, it’s easy to turn into a full day out.
Excellent for primary school ages.
Sheffield Aqua Park

If your older kids or teens think splash parks are “for babies”, this is probably your answer.
Huge inflatable obstacle courses on open water with climbing walls, jumps and slides.
Definitely one for confident swimmers and older children rather than toddlers.
Kimi would pick this over a paddling pool every single time now.
Meadowhall Summer Beach Club & AquaSplash

During the summer season, Meadowhall often transforms part of the Orange Car Park into its huge Summer Beach Club event. We have been twice now and the kids love it. Especially the big water play area. It can get very busy so we always go for the earliest slot and straight to the water queue. The event which includes:
- sandy beach areas
- rides
- family entertainment
- water walkers
- splash-style water fun
- AquaSplash swimming pools
- food stalls
- chill-out areas
Meadowhall describes the event as including AquaSplash water park pools “perfect for hours of fun for children of all ages”.
What makes this one quite useful for families is that it combines:
- shopping
- food
- splash fun
- rides
- indoor options if weather changes
So it works well for mixed-age family days where not everybody wants to do the same thing.
It’s especially handy if you’ve got:
- toddlers who want water play
- older kids who want rides
- teenagers who want Meadowhall shops
- parents who secretly just want a coffee and air conditioning
Worth noting though:
the Summer Beach Club is seasonal rather than permanent and dates can change each year, usually operating during the main school holidays. Always check Meadowhall’s official events page before travelling.
Sheffield City Centre Water Fountains (Peace Gardens)

If you’ve ever been into Sheffield city centre during hot weather, you’ll already know this turns into unofficial splash-pad central.
The fountains and water features in the Peace Gardens become packed with children cooling off during warm weekends and school holidays.
And because it’s right in the middle of the city centre, it’s easy to combine with lunch, shopping or even some museum stops or soft play.
The fountains are part of Sheffield’s famous Peace Gardens water features, which include dozens of jets and cascades.
However — and this is important — these are public city-centre fountains rather than a dedicated supervised splash park.
If children are running through the fountains, water shoes are strongly recommended because you don’t know what could potentially be on the ground surface, especially in busy city-centre areas. Surfaces can also become slippery when wet.
As with all water play, children should be supervised carefully at all times.
Places Families Often Paddle in Derbyshire (Important Safety Advice)
On hot days, lots of local families head to shallow river edges and streams around the Peak District for a paddle and a picnic.
We’ve included a few popular spots below because they’re regularly mentioned by Derbyshire parents.
However — and this is really important — these are NOT supervised splash parks or designated swimming areas.
River conditions can change incredibly quickly, even when water looks shallow and calm. Hidden currents, sudden drops, slippery rocks, cold water shock and fast-moving water can all be dangerous, especially for children.
Ey-Up Kids Derbyshire is not advising these locations are “safe swimming” spots and parents should always risk assess conditions themselves, supervise children closely and avoid entering water after heavy rain or poor weather.
Water shoes are strongly recommended.
