If you’re looking for free playgrounds in Chesterfield, it’s a slightly different feel to places like the Derbyshire Dales free playgrounds options.

You won’t find loads of big, destination-style play parks — but what you do get are easy, reliable local spots that are perfect for after school, weekends, or those “we just need to get out” kind of days.

We use these parks all the time with the kids — they’re simple, local, and they work when you need something quick and stress-free.

🌿 Queen’s Park

📍 Boythorpe Road, Chesterfield, S40 2ND

Right in the centre of Chesterfield, this is probably the most well-known park locally — and one we come back to again and again.

There are multiple play areas, plenty of open space, and extras like the lake, café and miniature railway, which make it feel more like a proper outing rather than just a quick park stop.

Queens Park has a children’s area for younger children at the bottom of the park, near the cricket area. It’s sand-based with a fun little play area, toilets by a small restaurant to order pizzas, ice cream, coffees and drinks.

It’s not huge, but it can get busy. But Eliza and Kimi have both spent many afternoons playing. For older kids at the tip right is an older-style playground.

There are also football courts as well. And keep an eye out for events from Cricket to music events and the fab Free Festival by Junction Arts.

During the summer months, the miniature train runs.

💡 Top tip: Great for mixed ages — you can easily split time between the playground, scooters, and just running around.

🌳 Holmebrook Valley Park

One of the best all-round outdoor spaces in Chesterfield if you want something a bit bigger.

There are multiple play areas, a lake, walking trails and loads of room for bikes and football, so it’s easy to turn this into a longer visit.

💡 Top tip: Bring scooters or bikes — this is where it really comes into its own.

🌊 Poolsbrook Country Park (Staveley)

If you want something that feels like more of a day out without going far, Poolsbrook is a great option.

There’s a play area, lakes, walking routes and cycle paths, plus loads of open space for kids to explore.

It’s accessible in terms of paths and layout, making it easier for buggies and wheelchairs to get around, but the play equipment itself is fairly basic. No shops or toilets so best to bring your own snacks and drinks. A small car park makes it an easy stop as well.

💡 Honest take: A good local option for a quick visit — not a destination playground.
