19 Best Farm Shops In Derbyshire You Should Visit (2026 Guide)

Updated June 2026

Looking for the Best Farm Shops in Derbyshire?

One of my favourite things about living in Derbyshire is that a trip to buy a loaf of bread can somehow turn into a full morning out.

What starts as “I’ll just nip in for some eggs” often ends with a boot full of local cheese, a Bakewell pudding, fresh vegetables, a couple of sausage rolls and a promise to myself that I definitely don’t need any more cake.

Farm shops have always been somewhere I love visiting with Kimi and Eliza. They are usually far less stressful than supermarkets, the food is often better quality and there is something nice about knowing you’re backing local farmers and producers.

Kimi tends to judge a farm shop entirely on the quality of its sausage rolls. Eliza is more interested in whether there are chickens, guinea pigs or any animals she can spot while we’re there.

Over the years we’ve visited farm shops right across Derbyshire, from small family-run businesses tucked away in the countryside to some of the most famous farm shops in the UK.

If you’re looking for fresh fruit, seasonal produce, free-range eggs, local honey, homemade sausages, artisan cheeses or simply somewhere lovely to stop for breakfast after a Peak District walk, these are the farm shops I would genuinely recommend.

1. Chatsworth Farm Shop, Pilsley

Address: Pilsley, Bakewell, Derbyshire DE45 1UF

Website: Chatsworth Farm Shop

Parking: Free parking available

Dog Friendly: Outside areas

Café: Yes

If somebody asked me where to send a visitor who only had time to visit one farm shop in Derbyshire, I’d probably say Chatsworth.

Set on the Chatsworth Estate, just a few minutes from Bakewell, this is one of the most famous farm shops in the country and for good reason.

The first thing you’ll notice is the quality. Whether you’re buying meat products, fresh vegetables, local cheeses or homemade pies, everything feels carefully chosen.

The extensive cheese counter alone is worth the journey.

You’ll find British cheeses, local favourites such as Dovedale Blue and plenty of produce sourced from tenant farms across the estate. There is a huge selection of fresh fruit and vegetables, home-produced lamb, free-range eggs and seasonal produce depending on the time of year.

The bakery section is dangerous if you’re trying to save money.

I rarely leave without buying something I hadn’t planned on buying.

The café is equally good and makes a lovely stop if you’re spending the day exploring Chatsworth House, the farmyard or the wider Peak District.

Last time we visited, Kimi announced that the sausage roll was “the best one so far this year”, which is apparently a serious accolade. Eliza was more interested in cake and somehow managed to choose the biggest slice available.

Top Tip

If you’re visiting during school holidays or bank holidays, arrive before 10.30am. It becomes extremely busy later in the day.

Don’t Leave Without Trying

  • Sausage rolls
  • Bakewell pudding
  • Local cheeses
  • Estate-reared meat
  • Seasonal produce

2. Croots Farm Shop, Duffield

Address: Farnah House Farm, Wirksworth Road, Duffield, Derbyshire DE56 4AQ

Website: www.croots.co.uk

Parking: Free parking

Café: Yes

Family Friendly: Very

Croots feels like the sort of farm shop that has something for everyone.

Foodies love the butchery and deli. Families love the animals and events. Locals pop in for everyday essentials and end up staying for coffee.

The shop stocks an impressive range of local produce, including free range pork, homemade sausages, fresh meat, local honey and vegetables sourced from local suppliers.

One thing I particularly like about Croots is that it still feels grounded in farming. You never get the impression that the farm side has become secondary to the retail side.

Eliza loves spotting the animals whenever we visit and there is often something going on for children during school holidays.

Top Tip

The breakfast menu is excellent. If you’re planning a weekend visit, book ahead.

3. Highfield House Farm Shop, Ashover

Address: Main Road, Stonedge, Ashover, Derbyshire S45 0LW

Website: www.highfieldhousefarm.co.uk

Parking: Free

Café: Yes

There are farm shops where you pop in for a quick purchase.

Then there are farm shops where you accidentally stay for two hours.

Highfield House definitely falls into the second category.

Set amongst beautiful Derbyshire countryside, this family-run farm shop combines a traditional butchery, tea room and farm shop all in one place.

The breakfasts are excellent and the views aren’t bad either.

Most people come for the food, but the atmosphere is what keeps them returning.

Top Tip

Perfect after a walk around Ashover or the Peak District.

4. Lambton Larder, Baslow

Address: 3 Rutland Buildings, Bakewell, United Kingdom, DE45 1

Website: Lambton Larder Facebook

One of my favourite places to stop when we’re heading towards Chatsworth.

It is smaller than some of the bigger farm shops in this guide but packed with quality produce.

Think local cheeses, fresh bread, homemade cakes, local beers and gifts that actually feel worth buying.

Their coffee is excellent too.

5. Denstone Hall Farm Shop & Café

Address: Main Road, Denstone, Staffordshire (just outside Derbyshire and popular with Derbyshire visitors)

Website: Denstone Hall Farm Shop & Cafe

This is the place I recommend when someone wants more than a farm shop.

The café is almost a destination in its own right and there is a huge selection of local produce.

Breakfast, lunch, coffee and cake all score highly here.

6. Hartington Farm Shop & Café, Hartington

Address: Hall Bank, Hartington, Buxton, Derbyshire SK17 0AT

Website: www.hartingtons.com

Parking: Nearby village parking

Café: Yes

If you’re spending the day in Hartington, it would be a crime not to pop into the farm shop.

The village itself is one of my favourite places in Derbyshire. It’s the sort of area where people still say hello when they pass you in the street, and it seems like stepping back in time a little.

Hartington is famous for its cheese, so naturally that’s one of the biggest draws here. You’ll find plenty of local cheeses, including the famous Hartington Stilton and other Peak District favourites.

The café is a lovely place to stop after exploring the village or walking part of the Tissington Trail.

We’ve often combined a visit here with a walk and an ice cream before heading home.

Top Tip

Visit early afternoon and grab a table outside if the weather is kind. The village atmosphere is lovely.

Don’t Miss

  • Hartington cheeses
  • Local chutneys
  • Homemade cakes
  • Peak District gifts

7. Adam’s Happy Hens, Chesterfield

Address: The Yews, Baslow Road, Chesterfield, United Kingdom, S42 7BH

Website: Adam’s Happy Hens Facebook page

Parking: Yes

This is one of those local businesses that has built a fantastic reputation through good produce and friendly service. And they keep adding lots of great things, including the new farm shop upgrade and lamb yoga!

If you like proper free-range eggs, this should be on your list.

The hens are clearly well looked after, and the quality of the eggs speaks for itself.

Whenever I buy eggs from somewhere like this, it reminds me how different local produce can be compared to supermarket alternatives.

The yolks are richer, the flavour is better, and somehow breakfast just tastes nicer.

Top Tip

Take cash just in case, and bring a cool bag if you’re buying several boxes. Also, keep an eye out for the kids’ events.

Don’t Miss

  • Free-range eggs
  • Local honey
  • Seasonal produce

8. Oakfield Farm Shop, Stanley Common

Address: Belper Road, Stanley Common, Derbyshire

Website: Oakfield Farm Shop

Parking: Yes

Oakfield is one of those places that many Derbyshire locals know about but visitors often overlook.

The shop focuses heavily on local produce and supporting local suppliers.

The café is popular with walkers, cyclists and families, and it’s somewhere you can comfortably spend an hour or two without being rushed.

There is a friendly atmosphere here that makes people return again and again.

Top Tip

Their breakfast options are particularly good if you’re heading out for a day exploring Derbyshire.

9. Newlands Farm Shop & Tea Room, Hilton

Address: Newlands Farm Shop & Tea Room, Hatton Fields, Hilton, Derby, DE65 5GQ

Website: Home | Newlands Farm Shop

Parking: Yes

Tea Room: Yes

Newlands combines a traditional farm shop with a welcoming tea room.

You’ll find fresh vegetables, locally sourced meat products, homemade cakes and plenty of gifts.

It feels very much like a traditional Derbyshire farm shop and that’s part of its charm.

Nothing flashy. Just good food and friendly service.

Top Tip

Perfect for picking up lunch supplies before heading into the countryside.

10. Marsh Green Farm Shop, Gillow Heath

Address: Matlock Rd, Chesterfield

Website: marsh green farm shop and cafe | derbyshire |

Although technically close to the Derbyshire border, Marsh Green has become a popular stop for many Derbyshire families.

The farm shop offers fresh produce, local meats, baked goods and a café.

Their customer service always gets mentioned when people talk about the business and it’s easy to see why.

The staff are knowledgeable and happy to recommend products.

Don’t Miss

  • Fresh meat
  • Local cheeses
  • Homemade cakes
  • Seasonal vegetables

11. Beltonville Farm Shop, Millers Dale

Address: Millers Dale, Derbyshire

Website: BELTONVILLE FARM

This is, without a doubt, one of the most scenic farm shops in the Peak District.

The views alone are worth the drive.

If you’re walking around Monsal Trail, Millers Dale or Monsal Head, it’s a brilliant place to stop afterwards.

The farm shop stocks local produce, fresh vegetables, meats and sweet treats.

The campsite nearby also makes it popular with visitors staying in the area.

Top Tip

Combine with a walk around Monsal Head for a fantastic Derbyshire day out.

12. Hackney House Café

Address: Hackney House Gifts & Café, Hackney Lane, Barlow, Dronfield, S18 7TD

Website: Takeaway | Hackney House Café

Hackney House is well known locally for its food and relaxed atmosphere.

The farm shop section may not be the biggest in Derbyshire, but the quality is excellent.

It’s particularly good for local gifts, baked goods and treats.

13. Hassop Family Farm

Address: Home Farm, Hassop, Bakewell, Derbyshire, DE45 1NT

Website: Simply Milk Organic

This is a new find for us as a family, and we love it. The outdoor play areas are a fab idea and such a lovely play space. The kids love the little cabins and the amazing milkshake vending machines.

You may not have as big a selection as some farm shops, but these little hits are fantastic for your milk, cakes, coffee, ice cream and more. An amazing experience and so unique, we love it.

  • Outdoor play area

14. Highfield House Farm Shop, Stonedge

Address: Highfield House Farm Shop, Darley Road, Stonedge, Ashover, Chesterfield, Derbyshire, S45 0LW

Website: Butchers and Tea Rooms – Highfield House Farm Shop

Although I’ve already mentioned Highfield House earlier in the guide, it deserves another nod for its reputation among local food lovers.

Set on a working farm with views across the surrounding countryside, it manages to strike the perfect balance between farm shop, butcher and café.

The meat counter is particularly impressive, and if you’re planning a family barbecue, this is a great place to stock up.

Best For

  • Fresh meat
  • Breakfasts
  • Local produce
  • Peak District views

15. Watson’s Farm Shop, Ashover

Address: Edale Road, Hope, Hope Valley, United Kingdom, S33 6ZF

Website: Watsons Farm Shop

Watson’s is one of those traditional Derbyshire farm shops where the emphasis stays firmly on food.

You won’t find rows of homeware or shelves full of products from the other side of the world.

Instead, you’ll find fresh produce, local suppliers and a business built around serving its community.

Top Tip

Combine with a visit to Ashover village, which is one of Derbyshire’s prettiest spots.

16. Fields Farm Shop

Address: Fields Farm-Farm Shop, 9 Rycroft Road, Hemington, DERBY, England DE74 2RE

Website: Home | Fields Farm – Farm Shop

A favourite with locals looking for fresh vegetables and locally sourced produce.

The emphasis here is on helping local farmers and keeping food miles low.

If you’re trying to shop more seasonally, this is exactly the sort of place worth supporting.

Don’t Miss

  • Seasonal vegetables
  • Local honey
  • Fresh fruit
  • Homemade preserves

17. Yeldersley Farm Shop

Address: Home Farm Painters Lane, Ashbourne, United Kingdom, DE6 1LS

Website: Yeldersley Farm Shop Facebook

Located near Ashbourne, Yeldersley is particularly popular with people travelling through southern Derbyshire.

It’s easy to access and stocks a good range of local produce.

Best For

  • Fresh vegetables

  • Everyday essentials

18. Betty’s Farm Shop

Address: The Castle Way, Derby DE65 6BW

Betty’s has built a dedicated customer base over the years thanks to its focus on quality produce and friendly service.

The staff are knowledgeable and happy to recommend products, which makes a refreshing change from larger supermarkets.

Top Tip

Ask what’s in season. Some of the best purchases are often the ones you hadn’t planned to buy.

19. Derby Garden Centre Farm Shop

Website: Derby Garden Centre – Our Locations – Blue Diamond

Address: Alfreton Road,, Little Eaton, Derby, Derbyshire DE21 5DB

Garden centres and farm shops often go hand in hand these days, and Derby Garden Centre is a good example.

Alongside plants and gardening supplies, you’ll find a well-stocked farm shop with local food, gifts and a café.

Best For

  • Combining shopping trips
  • Coffee and cake
  • Local gifts

Best Farm Shops for Families

As a mum, these are the ones I think work particularly well with children:

  • Croots Farm Shop
  • Hassop family Farm (Plus a great play area for kids and they will love the milk and milkshake vending machines).
  • Chatsworth Farm Shop
  • Denstone Hall Farm Shop
  • Oakfield Farm

They’re spacious, welcoming and don’t make you feel rushed when little legs suddenly decide they need another toilet stop.

Why Shop Local?

Buying from Derbyshire farm shops means helping local farmers, local producers and family-run businesses.

The food is often fresher, travels fewer miles and helps keep money within local communities.

Many of these businesses source produce from surrounding farms and work closely with local suppliers throughout the Peak District.

My Top 5 Farm Shops for Food Lovers

If your main goal is filling the fridge with delicious food rather than just browsing, these would be my personal picks.

1. Chatsworth Farm Shop

Best overall range.

2. Croots Farm Shop

Fantastic butchery and deli.

3. Highfield House Farm Shop

Excellent breakfasts and meat counter.

4. Hartington Farm Shop

Total cheese heaven.

5. Denstone Hall

Amazing café and quality produce.

Best Farm Shops for Breakfast in Derbyshire

Let’s be honest, a good breakfast can make a farm shop visit even better.

My favourites are:

  • Highfield House Farm Shop
  • Denstone Hall
  • Croots Farm Shop
  • Chatsworth Farm Shop

All serve generous portions and proper coffee.

Kimi would probably add a separate ranking purely based on sausage rolls.

Farm Shops with Great Gifts

Not everyone visits a farm shop for vegetables.

If you’re looking for presents, hampers or foodie gifts, I’d recommend:

  • Chatsworth Farm Shop
  • Lambton Larder
  • Hartington Farm Shop
  • Hackney House

These all have gift sections that feel carefully chosen rather than filled with things nobody actually wants.

Visiting Farm Shops with Kids

One thing I’ve learnt over the years is that children are usually happier at farm shops than supermarkets.

There is more space.

People tend to be friendlier.

There are often animals nearby.

And somehow a shopping trip feels more like an outing.

When Kimi was younger he loved helping choose vegetables and cakes. These days he’s mainly interested in food. Eliza still enjoys spotting chickens, sheep and anything furry.

If you’re planning a family day out in Derbyshire, adding a farm shop stop often makes the day feel a little more special.

Many also have cafés, ice cream, outdoor seating and space to stretch little legs.

And if all else fails, cake usually solves most problems.

Final Thoughts

One of the lovely things about Derbyshire is that no matter where you are, there’s usually a great farm shop just around the corner.

Whether you’re searching for fresh fruit, local honey, free-range eggs, homemade cakes, artisan cheeses or simply somewhere nice to stop for lunch, you’ll find plenty of choice.

Just don’t expect to leave with only the one thing you went in for.

Tips for Visiting Derbyshire Farm Shops

After years of visiting farm shops with Kimi and Eliza, I’ve learnt a few things.

Go Early

The best bakery items and fresh produce often sell quickly.

Take a Cool Bag

Especially during summer.

Leave Room in the Car

You will almost certainly buy more than planned.

Try Something New

Farm shops are a great place to discover local products you won’t find elsewhere.

Ask Questions

Staff are usually incredibly knowledgeable and happy to recommend products.

Why Derbyshire Farm Shops Are Worth Supporting

Farm shops do far more than sell food.

They support local farmers.

They help small producers reach customers.

They keep money within local communities.

They create jobs.

And they help preserve Derbyshire’s farming heritage.

In a world where so much shopping is done online or through large supermarkets, there’s something reassuringly genuine about speaking to somebody who actually knows where the food came from.

Final Thoughts

Whether you’re looking for fresh vegetables, free-range eggs, local honey, homemade cakes, artisan cheeses, quality meat or simply somewhere nice to stop for lunch, Derbyshire has some fantastic farm shops.

Some are destinations in their own right. Others are hidden gems that locals have been quietly supporting for years.

For me, Chatsworth remains the premier all-round experience, but there are plenty of smaller family-run farm shops across Derbyshire that deserve just as much attention.

The best advice I can give is simple.

Pick one you’ve never visited before and go.

Take your time, have a browse, grab a coffee and see what catches your eye.

Just don’t be surprised if you go in for a loaf of bread and come out with three bags of shopping, a Bakewell pudding and a promise that you’ll definitely be back next week.

That’s happened to me more times than I’d like to admit.
