One of my favourite things about living in Derbyshire is that a trip to buy a loaf of bread can somehow turn into a full morning out.
What starts as “I’ll just nip in for some eggs” often ends with a boot full of local cheese, a Bakewell pudding, fresh vegetables, a couple of sausage rolls and a promise to myself that I definitely don’t need any more cake.
Farm shops have always been somewhere I love visiting with Kimi and Eliza. They are usually far less stressful than supermarkets, the food is often better quality and there is something nice about knowing you’re backing local farmers and producers.
Kimi tends to judge a farm shop entirely on the quality of its sausage rolls. Eliza is more interested in whether there are chickens, guinea pigs or any animals she can spot while we’re there.

If somebody asked me where to send a visitor who only had time to visit one farm shop in Derbyshire, I’d probably say Chatsworth.
Set on the Chatsworth Estate, just a few minutes from Bakewell, this is one of the most famous farm shops in the country and for good reason.
The first thing you’ll notice is the quality. Whether you’re buying meat products, fresh vegetables, local cheeses or homemade pies, everything feels carefully chosen.
The extensive cheese counter alone is worth the journey.
You’ll find British cheeses, local favourites such as Dovedale Blue and plenty of produce sourced from tenant farms across the estate. There is a huge selection of fresh fruit and vegetables, home-produced lamb, free-range eggs and seasonal produce depending on the time of year.
The bakery section is dangerous if you’re trying to save money.
I rarely leave without buying something I hadn’t planned on buying.
The café is equally good and makes a lovely stop if you’re spending the day exploring Chatsworth House, the farmyard or the wider Peak District.
Last time we visited, Kimi announced that the sausage roll was “the best one so far this year”, which is apparently a serious accolade. Eliza was more interested in cake and somehow managed to choose the biggest slice available.
Top Tip
If you’re visiting during school holidays or bank holidays, arrive before 10.30am. It becomes extremely busy later in the day.

Croots feels like the sort of farm shop that has something for everyone.
Foodies love the butchery and deli. Families love the animals and events. Locals pop in for everyday essentials and end up staying for coffee.
The shop stocks an impressive range of local produce, including free range pork, homemade sausages, fresh meat, local honey and vegetables sourced from local suppliers.
One thing I particularly like about Croots is that it still feels grounded in farming. You never get the impression that the farm side has become secondary to the retail side.
Eliza loves spotting the animals whenever we visit and there is often something going on for children during school holidays.
Top Tip
The breakfast menu is excellent. If you’re planning a weekend visit, book ahead.

Highfield House definitely falls into the second category.
Set amongst beautiful Derbyshire countryside, this family-run farm shop combines a traditional butchery, tea room and farm shop all in one place.
The breakfasts are excellent and the views aren’t bad either.
Most people come for the food, but the atmosphere is what keeps them returning.

One of my favourite places to stop when we’re heading towards Chatsworth.
It is smaller than some of the bigger farm shops in this guide but packed with quality produce.
Think local cheeses, fresh bread, homemade cakes, local beers and gifts that actually feel worth buying.
Their coffee is excellent too.
5. Denstone Hall Farm Shop & Café

The café is almost a destination in its own right and there is a huge selection of local produce.

If you’re spending the day in Hartington, it would be a crime not to pop into the farm shop.
The village itself is one of my favourite places in Derbyshire. It’s the sort of area where people still say hello when they pass you in the street, and it seems like stepping back in time a little.
Hartington is famous for its cheese, so naturally that’s one of the biggest draws here. You’ll find plenty of local cheeses, including the famous Hartington Stilton and other Peak District favourites.
The café is a lovely place to stop after exploring the village or walking part of the Tissington Trail.
We’ve often combined a visit here with a walk and an ice cream before heading home.
Top Tip
Visit early afternoon and grab a table outside if the weather is kind. The village atmosphere is lovely.

This is one of those local businesses that has built a fantastic reputation through good produce and friendly service. And they keep adding lots of great things, including the new farm shop upgrade and lamb yoga!

The hens are clearly well looked after, and the quality of the eggs speaks for itself.
Whenever I buy eggs from somewhere like this, it reminds me how different local produce can be compared to supermarket alternatives.
The yolks are richer, the flavour is better, and somehow breakfast just tastes nicer.
